Remarketing: Creepy or Effective?

Have you ever visited a website to look at a pair of shoes? Say you put the shoes in your online cart, and decide not to buy at that exact moment for whatever reason. Then, moments later you are being followed by an online ad for that pair of shoes.

Coincidence? Stalking? Nope.. Just remarketing!

The idea behind remarketing is to get a higher percentage of visitors to convert to a sale, because they are reminded of your business even after they leave. This has become one of the most common practices used by business owners these days. Why wouldn’t you want to get in front of your customer once they have left your website?

How does it work?

Retargeting focuses on the percentage of people who did not make it to that final step of buying your product online, visiting your gallery page, or seeing your location. We can also add a remarketing tool on the search engine. So, if someone searches for your company but does not make it to your site (or even visited the competitions site!) we can serve them an ad and bring them back to your website.

Here’s what Google has to say about it: “Remarketing data is used to match your users to Google accounts, add users to remarketing lists, generate similar audiences, show dynamic ads, and to ensure your Google Ads remarketing campaigns comply with Google’s policies.” (2020). So it’s not that creepy, right? Google uses your online data you have provided to show you ads that mean the most to you. This is a good thing if you are a business. You will be reaching your target audience and those who are similar in the location provided.

Without getting to technical, Google uses a pixel to track and essentially “ping” the right users at the right time. This is to increase engagement and awareness. And, ultimately bring users to a site or page that is ideal for customer experience. That is why you have received ads for things you may have only thought or dreamed about! Google is smart, and always evolving. Which is good for you as a business owner and as a user.
